Descriptive Notation: 'The Evergreen' - Berlin, 1852

Wolverhampton Chess Club

Once again I have made a 'swf' for you to play through the moves - this time with the descriptive notation. Click here to open this swf in a new page.

Below you will find the moves written out in full. You will notice that the recorded moves are sometimes shortened. Instead of putting in the full address the chess player has recorded say, 'P-B3' instead of 'P-QB3. This is possible if there is only one possible move for a pawn to a third bishop square. The habit chess players have of shortening the code makes the Algebraic Notation a much safer bet for avoiding ambiguity - hence its current widespread use.
